How to wash and care for your swimsuit?

A great swimsuit is more than just a summer essential, it’s an investment in style and confidence. Whether you’ve found your perfect bikini, a chic one-piece, or a breezy beach cover-up, caring for it properly will help it look beautiful season after season. Swimsuits are made from delicate fabrics that don’t always get along with salt water, chlorine, or sunscreen. The good news? With the right care routine, you can keep yours in top condition for years to come.

1. Rinse Immediately After Use

The single best thing you can do for your swimsuit is to rinse it as soon as you take it off. Chlorine, salt water, and even minerals from fresh water can break down elastic fibres over time. A quick rinse under cool, fresh water removes most of these residues before they have a chance to cause damage.

2. Hand Wash with Mild Detergent

Skip the washing machine - it’s too harsh on delicate swim fabrics. Instead, gently hand wash your swimsuit in cool water with a small amount of mild detergent (a baby shampoo or soap designed for delicates works beautifully). Avoid bleach or strong detergents, which can weaken elastic and cause fading.

3. Reshape While Wet

After washing, gently press out excess water (never wring or twist - that can stretch the fabric). Lay the swimsuit flat on a towel and gently press it back into shape. This helps the fabric maintain its fit and structure.

4. Avoid Tumble Drying and Ironing

Heat is the enemy of swimwear. Never put your swimsuit in the dryer or iron it. Both can break down elastic fibres, leaving the fabric saggy and faded.

5. Dry Flat, Out of Direct Sunlight

While it’s tempting to leave your swimsuit draped over a sun lounger, direct sunlight can fade colours. Instead, lay it flat on a towel in the shade. This also prevents stretching that can happen if it’s hung while wet.

6. Be Aware of Lotions and Oils

Sunscreen, tanning oils, and body lotions are essential for skin protection, but they can stain or discolour swimsuits. Always let your sunscreen absorb fully into your skin before putting on your suit. If oils or lotions do transfer, rinse as soon as possible.

7. Rotate Your Swimwear

If you swim often, try to alternate between a few different swimsuits. Elastic fibres need time to rest and return to their original shape, so giving them a day off helps extend their lifespan.

8. Watch Where You Sit

Pool edges, rough tiles, and wooden benches can snag or pill delicate fabrics. Keep a towel handy to sit on if you’re at the pool or beach to protect your swimwear from rough surfaces.

9. Store with Care

When the season’s over, store swimsuits flat in a drawer rather than hanging them, which can stretch straps and fabric. Make sure they’re fully dry before putting them away to prevent mildew.

Final Thoughts

Taking the time to follow these swimsuit care tips will keep your bikinis and swimsuits looking beautiful season after season. Remember: rinse straight after use, hand wash gently, dry flat, and protect from sun, oils, and rough surfaces and you’ll keep your favourite designer swimwear pieces looking vibrant and fitting beautifully for much longer.
